Talking to him unlocks the side quest “Pestilence” which ties in with the main quest. Your next stop is the bailiff (Melichar) who lives in the building just south of the stables (across the street from the stables). Ask the local bailiff about the situation He is laying on the floor inside the stables (northern-most building of the village). They will tell you where to find Matthias. Travel to Merhojed and talk to any of the villagers on the streets.

You need to be able to read to fight the cure for the sickness fast before anyone dies!
